I realize it’s been awhile since I’ve written a post. I just haven’t felt like it, I suppose. But, I thought I should write one last one for 2015.
The thing is this: Who’s even reading this blog?
A blog is a way for a writer to increase his or her visibility. Let’s say I take my wonderful novel to a publisher. Guess what the first thing the Publisher asks me: “So, how many people follow your blog?”
“Uh, well, um…two.” But in my case, looking on the bright side, I am not related to those two people, so they REALLY count! Ha! Take that Publishers!
I also wonder about those bloggers who have had some measure of success. Can bloggers sustain this success? In the case of Julie Powell, she could not. And, the gratitude guy (can’t remember who he was – I saw a Ted Talk – why is it when you want to find something you can’t, and when you’re not looking for something you find it?)
Oh right, back to the gratitude guy – he wrote a book on Gratitude – Does he have a second book within him? Maybe.
I guess what I’m trying to do here is make myself feel better. Here’s a English major’s attempt at a math equation:
No success = Longevity
No, that doesn’t work. I can switch out the “No Success” for a successful writer like say,
Alice Munro = Longevity
She made it look so easy. Sure, she has a natural gift for writing and storytelling. But, writing is a craft. You have to work at it. And, you have to rewrite like CRAZY! Even Alice Munro. (Although, truth be told, I have no proof of this. Maybe she did just wake up every morning and punch out a fabulously perfect first draft manuscript on her computer. If so, I want that computer!)
The Tortoise and the Hare. Slow and steady wins the race. It’s true, right? I am having déja-vu here. I am sure I have written about The Tortoise and the Hare, and most likely when trying to remind myself that success gained slowly over time is sustainable.
This is true of business too.
So, the thing about this writing thing is that I have finished a first novel and am in the rewrite stage. I really want to bang my head up against a wall. Probably not a good idea. I may need my brain to finish the book.
The good news is I did write today. And, I would like to encourage you all to do what you love to do. Every day.
I sometimes forget that I am miserable when I am not writing. The crazy thing is that I am also miserable when I am writing. LOL
I am incurable!
Writing is bloody hard work. Try it. They say we all have a novel in us. Maybe your novel is a Memoir or a piece of Creative Non-Fiction.
I would feel better knowing I have my fellow man struggling along beside me. So, you (my two loyal readers) would be doing me a favor!
Happy New Year!
Question: If you’d like to share a time when you overcame a challenge or obstacle, I am sure we would all appreciate it!
